Hi, I have a 2002 E39 525d with a misfire at 1000rpm. It is completely smooth at tickover, but a bit lumpy at 1000rpm.As the revs increase the lumpiness reduces, and by 2000rpm it is smooth again. Any ideas please ? |
Hi Andrew, without seeing the car i woild suspect either a fuel injector could be at fault, but as the misfire is apparent most of the time I suspect the most likely cause of the fault to be in the inlet manifold, there are a series of flaps used in acceleration, it sounds as though one of the flaps has become dislodged and wedged itself behind one of the valves, regards Jon |

1999 V 523i Hi Jon, i have an intermittent engine management light showing which has proved difficult to diagnose, the car runs mainly fine but idles rough when light is illuminated, diagnostic tests show a possible fault with a camshaft sensor. Is this the likely cause and if so is it something i could access and change myself or best left to the professionals? |
HI FRASER IT COULD BE A CAM SENSOR FAULT, OR A CRANK SENSOR FAULT, ALSO UNDER THE CENTRE ENGINE COVER THERE IS A SMALL ENGINE BREATHER HOSE AND THIS CAN CAUSE THE FAULT YOU HAVE, THIS IS THE FIRST ITEM TO CHECK AS IT IS A SIMPLE FIX, REGARDS JON |

I have a 1991 E36 325i and am having problems with water leaking into the car. I think it is comming from the sunroof. Is this something which can be a DIY fix or is it a major job to repair. If it can be done within my own garage how would I go about this or have you a contact site which sows how to remove deadliner etc. Thanks |
HI LEE, IT CAN BE A DIY JOB, IT IS POSSIBLE THAT ONE OF THE DRAINS HAS BECOME DETATCHED AT THE SUNROOF CASSETTE. YOU WILL NEED TO DROP THE HEADLINING AND YOU WILL SEE 4 DRAIN HOSES 1 AT EACH CORNER, IF ONBE HAS COME ADRIFT SIMPLY PUSH IT BACK ON AND SECURE WITH A JUBILEE CLIP, REGARDS JON |

Hi..i have recently bought a 323i se 2000 model and it came with a full bm service history one of which was done prior to me buyin it...i have 2 slight probs i think...1st, although i kno theres enuf oil in the engine, the oil warnin light goes out after startin, but re-appears for a few seconds once i start to drive the car...this only happens when startin from cold...any ides?....2nd, the drivers window has just started playin up, when going up from fully down it stops and sticks...it seems to come away from the window runner nearest the door catch..i can pull it back into line and it goes up further, i do this to get it all the way up, also once it is up theres wind noise from the window now, so i kno its not seatin properly, how can i rectify this prob, is it easy to remove door panel and clear enuf to see whats stickin?.... thank you |
HI BRYAN, IT SOUNDS TO ME AS THOUGH FIRSTLY THE OIL LEVEL SENSOR HAS FAILED AND SECONDLY THE DRIVERS WINDOW REGULATOR IS FAULTY, REGARDS JON |

Hi,i wonder if you could help.I have a 2001 325 ci which repeatedly cuts out more noticeably after starting,if you blip the throttle it also cuts out.I have connected vehicle to a scanner and fault found is cam sensor bank `a`.I renewed the sensor but i still have the same problem.I have erased the fault numerous times but it still shows same fault.I have checked all wiring connectors without success.Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.regards Mike |
hI MIKE, FIRSTLY DID YOU FIT A BMW SENSOR AS I HAVE HAD ISSUES WITH PATTERN ITEMS. THERE ARE TWO CAM SENSORS ON YOUR ENGINE, SO I WOULD RECHECKJ THE FAULT MEMORY ON THIS AS IT COULD ALSO NEED A CRANK SENSOR, REGARDS JON |

thanks for geting back to me but you have given me a shock when you said about the head gasket how will i know if it is srating to go or if indeed it has gone thanks again roy |
HI ROY, THE FIRST SIGNS OF A HEADGASKET FAILURE ON THE V8 IS THE FACT THAT IT MAY START TO 'BLOW' THE PIPES OFF OR SIMPLY SPLIT THEM WITH THE EXCESS PRESSURE, REGARADS JON |

i have a 1999 t reg bmw535i auto saloon which overheated because of cracked hose my question is when the rad is cold where should the red float needle on the expanson tank be and how can i get ride of a air lock if i have one thanks for any help you can give and thanks for your time roy |
When the car is cold the red float should be level with the top of the expansion bottle. Th3e best way to fill the system is to make sure the engine is switched of, remove the bleed screw next to the radiator cap, fill with antifreeze/water mix until the water comes out of the bleed screw constantly, refit the bleed screw and radiator cap and start the car, put the heater on hot when the heater is hot the engine should now be bled.
Please be awre though that the usual cause of a burst pipe on the v8 engine is usually the first sign of headgasket failure, |

bmw e46 323 200 (w reg) when replacing my belts i noticed that a have some noise on the air con pulley. bmw say that the compressor comes as all one part, which is over £400. i hardly use the air con and am tempted to just remove the belt. can the pulley be replaced individually or would the whole unit need to be replaced. |
Hi Simon, You can purchase a clutch repair kit at around £100.00, or an exchange unit from Euro Car Parts. You can remove the belt though as the air con has its own belt Regards Jon |

BMW M3 |
2004 04 M3 SMG Conv. Hi, Ive recently purchased the car and i'm not sure whether there is a problem with the brakes. The reason being is that the discs are not worn and new pads were added to the car (about two weeks) before i bought the vehicle. The pads were not standard BMW but either atc/ate (cant remember which!). The brakes work fine under light braking but when pushing the car and breaking late.hard they make a grinding type of noise (which i dont know if its normal) and after pushing the car through a series of 6 roundabouts there over heated and stopped working! Any ideas would be helpful - Many Thanks |
Hi Craig, The noise you are experiencing is perfectlly normal for your car , this noise is made as the discs are cross drilled. It sounds as though the pads you have fitted may be too hard, are they race pads? if so you will need to put a softer fast road or standard brake pad in, also it could just be that the brake fluid requires replacement due to being overheated., I would recommend using a dot 5.1 fluid as this has a higher fail threshold than the standard 4.0 which is used. regards Jon |
